About San Angelo

Angelo State University is located in San Angelo, a West Texas community of more than 100,000 friendly people. The city offers the amenities of a large city with the convenience of a small town.

San Angelo enjoys an average of 251 sunny days each year. The weather allows the city to host a number of outdoor events and festivities. Several annual outdoor concerts are held at the city’s River Stage, and the nearby River Walk, a public four-mile jogging/walking trail, includes gardens and a nine-hole golf course. Also downtown is the International Water Lily Collection, a beautiful display of lilies from around the world.

San Angelo is an arts epicenter with regular performances by the Angelo Civic Theatre and the San Angelo Symphony, but the city also has a handful of other outlets for artists. The Chicken Farm Art Center, a compound of galleries, studios and restaurants, features work from artists of all mediums and is open to the public on the first Saturday of every month. And of course, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, a work of art in its own right, has a renowned permanent ceramics collection and is the site of diverse traveling exhibitions.

San Angelo also offers entertainment options for all interests. With nearby Lake Nasworthy, boating, fishing, wind sailing and wakeboarding are popular activities. In addition, outdoorsy-types can enjoy hunting, camping and cycling in areas surrounding San Angelo. The city also boasts five golf courses, three public and two private.

For those who like the hustle and bustle of the city, San Angelo offers fun and funky downtown shopping at one-of-a-kind stores on Concho Avenue. Stephens Central Library serves as a hub for the downtown area with its café and live music performances. And several downtown dance clubs and pubs offer every kind of live music, from Texas country and rockabilly to jazz and Tex Mex.

San Angelo also offers all of the big box stores and restaurant chains found in metropolitan areas, and the large multiplex movie theatre is another popular entertainment destination. Sports fans can enjoy minor league professional baseball and arena football games with the San Angelo Colts and San Angelo Bandits.

The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo, held every year during the last two weeks in February, offers an authentic West Texas experience. It is ranked in the top 10 largest rodeos in the U.S., and with all of the sights and sounds of the midway, it has something for everyone to enjoy.
