The 2017 International Studies Program to Australia to be conducted between July 9th and August 8th, 2017, will provide approximately 15 undergraduate students and 5 graduate students a unique opportunity to study tropical biology and biodiversity of one of the best available examples of tropical forest in Central America.
The program is open to 15 undergraduate and 5 graduate currently enrolled ASU students in good standing who are in academic programs for which the classes offered are appropriate. Student participants normally will be full-time undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a major or minor in biology.
Biology 4381 Vertebrate Natural History of Australia. This course will introduce students to the unique vertebrate fauna of Australia. Emphasis will be placed on establishing a working knowledge of the major groups of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians of the island continent. To a lesser extent, an introduction will be presented of the fishes of Australia, including forms likely to be seen in the coral reef systems off Australia’s coastline. Professor: Dr. Robert C. Biology 4381 Conservation of Biodiversity in Australia. The concept of biological diversity and the need for its conservation will be presented in the context of the continent of Australia. In addition to an overview of the Australian fauna, students will be presented with the conservation concerns and possible solutions for loss of biodiversity in Australia. Biology 6381 Isolation and Evolution: The Biology of Australia. Australia’s long history of isolation has resulted in unique species and biological communities. We will examine this history and violations in the Hardy-Weinberg assumptions to explain the unique species and radiations of Australia.
Students will be extensively briefed prior to departure regarding travel arrangements and schedules with addresses and telephone numbers given each participant. All travel arrangements will be made by the program directors and approved by the University. All program participants must have adequate health and accident insurance coverage in case of medical care or emergencies. Participants must provide the directors with a copy of the policy number and company name of their insurance policies.

Undergraduate Students Must have: Be accepted into an ASU-sponsored study abroad program Be a full-time student at ASU the previous two academic semesters Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have completed 30 hours of coursework by the scholarship application deadline Graduate Students Current students must have a 3.0 GPA Newly accepted students must have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA
Travel Expenses The basic cost of the program will be about $5,000 which will cover round-trip airfare, class excursion fees and travel, and accommodations. Students will also be responsible for tuition, fees, course materials, passport, travel insurance, and miscellaneous personal expenses. . Local transportation, additional excursions and meal expenses will be the responsibility of the student.

The program will be co-directed by Dr. Michael T. Dixon, Associate Professor of Biology and Dr. Robert C. Dowler, Tippett Professor of Biology. Both co-directors have experience in the fields to be taught in this program as well as international field research experience. Both Dixon and Dowler previously have taught study abroad courses in Costa Rica and Europe over the past several years.
