Texas School Counselor Certification
This program was designed for students who already have a master’s degree and want to apply to the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) to seek certification as a Texas school counselor.
Students will receive certification after successfully completing the coursework and passing the TExES Counseling exam.
All courses offered in the program are delivered through an online format for the convenience of the student.

This certification program is intended for Texas teachers seeking to be come K-12 school counselors.
Our department holds State (Texas Education Agency) and national (NCATE) accreditation.
This program includes 18 semester credit hours of graduate coursework on an 8-week rotation.
Most students complete the program in 10 months or less depending on course availability, start date and number of courses taken during each semester.

- Master’s degree from an accredited university
- Undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.75 or at least a 2.75 GPA in your last 60 hours
- Texas Teacher Certification
- Two years of classroom teaching experience in a public or accredited private school

Students pursuing a professional certificate on a certification plan may use previous graduate course work completed through Angelo State University to fulfill certification requirements. All work must be completed within a period of six years from the earliest credit to be counted on the certification plan. Under certain circumstances, a time extension of up to four years may be granted on a course-by-course basis.

Students enrolled in this certification plan are not eligible for federal student loans. They are eligible for a state funded loan through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board called the College Access Loan and Private Alternative Educational Loans.
