ASU is committed to providing a safe work environment for its employees. The Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management’s occupational safety program initiatives are based on federal and state regulations to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of the people working in the campus community.
Employees who are identified as having the potential to be exposed to hazardous chemicals in the workplace are required to receive Hazard Communication Standards and Worker Right-to-Know training within 30 days of employment. OP 34.02 Hazard Communication Program also stipulates that they receive additional training from their supervisor covering the workplace hazard communication program. This training will be documented using the Hazard Communication Training Form.
Occupational Safety Guidelines
Supervisors should ensure that employees who handle, work with, or are exposed to hazardous chemicals in the workplace are familiar with the Hazardous Chemical Storage and Spill Contingency Plan. This plan will be used to develop departmental policies/procedures designed to mitigate and respond to hazardous material spills.
Employees who may be exposed to respiratory hazards while performing assigned duties are required to take measures to avoid or minimize exposure to harmful substances. In accordance with the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard, the Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management developed a written Respiratory Protection Program which outlines procedures to protect employees and prevent potential occupational illnesses.
The Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan is designed to protect employees who are identified as having the potential to be exposed to bodily fluids in the workplace. These employees are also required to receive vaccinations and training in accordance with OP 34.22 Bloodborne Pathogens Protection Program.

Laboratory and Chemical Safety
The Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management’s laboratory and chemical safety program initiatives are based on federal, state and local regulations to ensure the health and well-being of all individuals exposed to chemical or biological agents on our campus.
Laboratory Safety Guidelines
The laboratory and chemical safety program is comprised of a Chemical Hygiene Plan, university-wide chemical inventory and tracking system; laboratory and chemical storage inspections; disposal of chemicals and other hazardous waste; and safety education and awareness.
Departments are required to use the Laboratory Emergency Planning guidelines to develop tailored emergency procedures for each laboratory with the specific purpose and design in mind. Laboratory Spill Procedures are also posted in all of the campus laboratories and chemical storage areas.

Fire and Life Safety
ASU is committed to providing a safe environment for its students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. The university’s fire and life safety program initiatives are based on state regulations and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines.
Fire Safety Information
The fire and life safety program involves numerous activities:
- Fire prevention
- Fire inspections and reporting
- Training and emergency drills
- Emergency planning and preparedness
Program responsibilities also include educating the campus on fire and life safety standards and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and guidelines. A Fire Alarm Report should be submitted anytime a fire alarm has been activated in a facility.
Housing and Residential Programs staff receive training on fire and life safety standards and emergency action plans to facilitate fire evacuation and implementation of emergency procedures, helping ensure a safe environment for their residents. Students should comply with the Residence Hall Handbook policies, rules, and regulations regarding fire and life safety to help prevent fires in residential facilities.
Everyone should be aware of their surroundings on a daily basis to help prevent injury to people and/or damage to property. Any unsafe condition should be reported immediately using the Unsafe Condition Report.
